The Amazing Grace lyrics are based on John Newton's reflections on an Old Testament text he was preparing to preach on, and he included his own experience about converting to Christianity, while he was travelling on a slave ship called the Greyhound.
The tune usually used for Amazing Grace was not original. Like other Christian hymns from this time, the song lyrics were sung to a number of melodys before and after they first became familiar to the song, New Britain.
